What exactly isn't working? The laptop keyboard/trackpad, or an external keyboard and mouse?

If it's the internal, you may need to get the drivers from the laptop manufacturer. If it's the external, it could be USB drivers.

Have you checked Device Manager? Are there any devices with yellow ! ...if so, those devices need drivers installed.

Hi Oddball. thanks for reply.
The internal mouse / keyboard are not working.
It's a factory reset to original configuration running Windows 7. Neither item is marked in Device Manager. Works on external keyboard & mouse fine. Now here's another funny part - when I remove both devices in device manager (using USB mouse) & reboot it finds both & installs drivers automatically. Keyboard then works but touchpad still doesn't. I have done the recovery twice, same problem.

Edit to add:

To test further I have just booted using a Linux live CD.
Both are working fine in Linux. Still nothing in Windows.
