It all started 3 days ago.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i 8932-GCU with Windows Vista 32bits Business Edition (SP2).

Suddenly, the USB ports stopped working

I checked the Device Manager but everything was fine with the USBs. However, the Teredo Tunnelling PseudoInterface had this little yellow triangles. (Status: This device cannot start - code 10). When I tried to disable it, to see if there was any conflict, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) became unresponsive.

That same night, Windows Update also became unresponsive while installing an update for the Ricoh SD card reader. When I tried to disable the SD card reader, the MMC crashed again. I tried to uninstall the USB drivers from the Device Manager...MMC crashed again.

I have tried another Windows Update, but it also became unresponsive while trying to create a Restore Point.
After reading this thread, showing how to isolate the problem using msconfig, I made a clean boot by disabling all non-Microsoft services. The USB worked but the MMC became unresponsive again when I tried to disable the card reader. The provided link doesn't show what to do when the problem is with some Microsoft service

I would really appreciate some help on those issues

Thanks in advance

Philippe

.PS:
1) The system came pre-loaded with Vista, so I don't have any CD
2) I have tried to use system restore, but it also failed

Instead of disabling or uninstalling the device, it might be better to update the driver from those you can find at the Lenovo/IBM website for your specific model. If USB powered external devices ae now woring, concentrate on that SD card reader.

I have a friend with a R61i which is running Vista Business 32-bit and simply uninstalled and deleted driver software and let Windows re-install drivers. Worked like a charm.

I have tried to update the software, but it says that I have te latest one.
I have try to uninstall/disable the driver, but Microsoft Management Console will hang in the process.
It is working in safe mode so my guess is that some MS service is blocking the process. But I can't seem to be able to identify the service.

Seems odd but if you call up a Command Prompt and type tasklist.svc then press Enter, you'll see a complete list of what's running. Right click anywhere in that black form and choose Select All then press Enter. That puts all the contents into the Clipboard - paste that either into Notepad or straight back here so we can see what's going on in there. No confidential information will be displayed.

There's one heck of a lot going on in one smal laptop :D but on first glance, i can't see anything that would stop USB ports working properly. I'll trawl through in more detail later and hopefully someone else will pitch in.
