It all started 3 days ago.
I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i 8932-GCU with Windows Vista 32bits Business Edition (SP2).
Suddenly, the USB ports stopped working
I checked the Device Manager but everything was fine with the USBs. However, the Teredo Tunnelling PseudoInterface had this little yellow triangles. (Status: This device cannot start - code 10). When I tried to disable it, to see if there was any conflict, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) became unresponsive.
That same night, Windows Update also became unresponsive while installing an update for the Ricoh SD card reader. When I tried to disable the SD card reader, the MMC crashed again. I tried to uninstall the USB drivers from the Device Manager...MMC crashed again.
I have tried another Windows Update, but it also became unresponsive while trying to create a Restore Point.
After reading this thread, showing how to isolate the problem using msconfig, I made a clean boot by disabling all non-Microsoft services. The USB worked but the MMC became unresponsive again when I tried to disable the card reader. The provided link doesn't show what to do when the problem is with some Microsoft service
I would really appreciate some help on those issues
Thanks in advance
Philippe
.PS:
1) The system came pre-loaded with Vista, so I don't have any CD
2) I have tried to use system restore, but it also failed
