I have a Lexmark Z53 printer that I have had for a couple of years. Under XP home edition, it will never print on the first try, but always on the second. I get an error that the computer can't communicate with the printer or that the printer attached is not a Lexmark Z53. When I hit print the second time, it prints fine.
Questions: I have it hooked up through a usb port. Could the computer be trying to read the wrong virtual printer port? Anyone have any clues?

Have you installed the latest drivers from Lexmark? According to its site, the latest drivers for your printer model came out in April 2002. If you haven't, I would suggest trying that first, before doing anything else. Be sure to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones. ;)
