Specifics:
software that stops responding: Living Cookbook
www.livingcookbook.com
(insight: I have talked on numerous occasions with the tech support - we have been through everything short of wiping out my hard drive and starting over)
I have cleaned, defrag, gotten rid of spyware and even morpheus and limewire - just to see if the was the prob. the program just hangs! Here's what I have running right now: (and the program just stops responding when I tell it to do something then starts again):

I am running win 2000 pro
392,736 kb ram
32.1 G free
The other thing is even though I have deleted both Limewire and Living cookbook and reinstalled living cookbook - it's icon is Limewire's icon of a 'plug'. What does that mean??? And why can I run this program at work and not a home!
