I'm wired to a cable modem, and I can't get an internet connection.

During the course of trying just about everything I've been able to find here and elsewhere to correct the problem, I ran into this after a successful ipconfig /release and attempting an ipconfig /renew:

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server.

The only successful PING is to the computer_IP_address.

I noticed that there's no Default Gateway. Is there supposed to be an address there? If so, how do I create that?

Although I've already tried more things than I can recall or even begin to list, I'm more than willing to start at the beginning and try everything again, if anybody has the patience to suggest everything in the right order!
