I've recently upgraded to Windows Live Messenger 2011 and I like the software, however the software will intermittently take up 50% of my CPU cycles and over 100-200Mb of memory, making it frustratingly slow to use. After looking through pages of Google results & the forums for the software itself, nothing has worked. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks -Fabez-.

If you're video chatting and/or voice chatting with it, it's going to use a good chunk of system resources.

What's the processor type and speed, the amount of RAM, and the amount of video memory in that computer?

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab). How many entries are checked?

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK. How many entries are started and on automatic?

Thanks for the response flavellee. I am not voice chatting with it, just using plain text. My processor is a dual core at 2.1GhZ and I have 3Gb of memory, although I think 1Gb of I have allocated as graphics memory. My startup tab only has my anti-virus software, but my services list is huge. Around half of them are stopped at the moment, and hiding all of the Microsoft services leaves six. The only thing I've noticed is that the flash ad at the bottom seems to go slow, could it be that ?

I'm still using Windows Live Messenger 2009 in both of my Windows 7 computers, so I'm not aware of what problems there may be with the 2011 version.

Hopefully, you haven't disabled a bunch of services.

I upgraded to Windows Live Messenger 2011 because I like it, the only think stopping me from using it to its full extent is this problem. I haven't disabled any services, I know that has the potential to create an entirely new problem. Do you have any ideas as to how I could pin down what's taking up the cycle ? Should I check the wait chain for the main process?

Without using and being familiar with WLM 2011 myself, I really don't know what else to tell you.

Thank you for the help though. Do you think it could be a problem with my other software, rather than Messenger ?

The only way to find out is to see a HijackThis log and see what's auto-loading and running in the background.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Your startup list can't look any better. All you have auto-loading is your antivirus program. (y)

If "startup type" in these services are set on Automatic, change them to Manual.

    FLEXnet Licensing Service

    Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

I don't use download managers myself, so I don't know if that's having any affect in your computer.

Thanks :) I have changed them to manual, and stopped them for now. I think I've narrowed the problem down as well, when the resource usage climbs, the flash advert at the bottom seems to have frozen. However if I change the style of the window it sometimes unfreezes, causing the usage to go down, sometimes not. This seems unusual as my Flash player is fully updated and does not cause the same problems in my browsers.
