A personal favorite for me is Avast Antivirus. They have a really good free version.

If AVG won't let you install, you might have remnants of previous antivirus or Windows Installer is messed up.

First, I would to go http://uninstallers.blogspot.com and find the listing for your previous antivirus. Download and run their cleanup utility. The major antivirus vendors are listed there.

My personal favourite is Avast! Free Edition.

I have tried AVG and MSE but found neither of them really cut the cake.

I've always found that the paid-for systems don't work as well as they should - the money seeming to be spent on graphics designers.

Yes, what are the error messages ? Does it complain about a previous security app you had installed?

I would hope the installation problems aren't being caused by an infection that is already there.

I agree with the hope but would also bet they are caused by issues already there, either that or the use of a reg cleaner!
