    Hi

2 computers(Pent IV 3.06ghz and celeron 3.0ghz, XPpro) wired to Linksys 8port router connected to Teryon cable modem.

Problem is: random loss of internet connection. Modem has been replaced by ISP (Shaw), problem still happens. The only way to regain internet is to power down router and modem and power back up.

Question: can router cause a modem to freeze, requiring the power down/up?

thanks in advance for any help.

Is either computer downloading from P2P networks? Some linksys routers do not work well with programs that saturate it with hundreds of connection requests at a time because for some reason, linksys made it in those models so the connections do not expire for a very long time.

    Hi

no computer is downloading from P2P network

Also when I lose the internet connection, the networking between computers is still functonal.

I am also having a speed problem when using the router, when one computer is hooked up directly to the modem the speed is almost 100x faster.

I'm going to replace the router next.

    thanks for any help.

How frequently are you losing your connection? Does powering the router and modem off always restore your connection on the first try? Does restarting either the cable modem or the router by itself restore your connection? This is a common type of problem, and it's sometimes due to the ISP, not anything on your end.

How frequently are you losing your connection?

2 or more times over an eight hour time period.

Does powering the router and modem off always restore your connection on the first try?

    Yes

Does restarting either the cable modem or the router by itself restore your connection?

not the router, not sure about the modem. They are both hooked up to a power bar and I just hit the switch on the power bar to power them up and down.

    thanks for any help/suggestions

I had this problem for over a year where it would desconnect two or three times a day
