OK I have no idea what happened.. I think windows security **** updated itself over night and spacked up my norton antivirus or something, cos that isnt there anymore, my internet security is but its being a little unresponsive.. next time i turned computer off and put it back on my usual profile is now apparently not the administrator, even though in user accounts it says it is.

I have reinstalled Norton and it says its totally working fine now..

    Problems:
My startup programs wont load on startup anymore, I only get te printer and the sound thing.
I get no TURN OFF button
I cannot get to the TASK MANAGER
I dont have a RUN button
    I cannot REGEDIT

    ANYONE got any idea?

I made a new administrative account and that one works fine, I cant see why this one is going mental

Im running Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002. Service Pack 2

if you've made a new one and it works fine, chances are that the old one became corrupt. Do you usually operate from the admin profile?

you don't want to operate under the admin profile. Create a new profile and give it admin priviliges. This is exactly WHY you don't want to operate under the admin profile.

That's still operating under the admin profile, because it's in the Administrators Group. Any account in the Administrators Group has system-wide administrator privileges.

For protection, create a limited user account or a power user account. Never use the administrator account except for running updates or system maintenance. Wherever possible, use "Run as..." to run any high-privilege application rather than logging on as Administrator.

If it is listed as an administrator account in User Accounts, then it is an administrator account.

No, that is operating under a profile that has admin rights. If I call a profile bob and give it admin rights, and it goes corrupt, I replace it with a new profile named bob. If I am using the default administrator profile to operate under, and that gets corrupt, well, I don't really have a backup for that.

I should have made myself clearer in this post. I should have said ' you don't want to operate under the default administrator account, as that is your safety net'.........what bbearen said was correct, we were talking the same language, just on a different bookshelf.

This is all getting a bit confusing. Is there any way of me sorting this out? Or is it the inevitable shift of all my files to another profile and then deleting this one?

What you need is for a Gold Shield member to look at your HijackThis log before you start making changes.
