I inadvertently (OK, stupidly) double clicked an icon in the Windows folder titled "alcrmv" - a blue spider, which appears to be a tool for removing drivers. I've now lost all sound. Any ideas out there how to restore? I'm on Windows XP

Try a system restore.
Start - Help and Support - Undo Changes ...
Pick a date prior to the incident.

That wasn't a tool for removing drivers, it was the drivers....

Hi Kiwiguy,

Thanks for your response. System Restore was unsuccessful. I was hoping to play my Split Endz CD today! Any more ideas?

Did you try to reinstall the sound driver?
Right click My Computer> properties> Hardware tab> then Device Manager> click the + at Sound video and game controllers
right click your Audio Controller and select properties>
Drivers tab> update driver
