I got a computer for free from a friend, but it's password protected and I want to re format the drive and just start clean. How do I do this?

Yeah, it's the administrator login password. The help page you sent me says that I need to be logged in as the administrator, but I can't because I don't know the password.

first off, before you reformat, remember that you will need an new os to put on. Rather important, that.

    Also, what OS?

Finally, why don't you just ask your 'friend' whom you got the pc off of?

that won't work, most likely. That key on the computer goes to the os that went with that computer. Do you not have the key for the xp cd you have?

put the xp cd in, boot to cd, follow the prompts to override the partition. You WILL need to activate windows, however.

But that is how you reformat the disk. You can also use dban to totally wipe the drive and then reinstall an os.
