There was a similar post here recently, but it advised anyone from following the same instructions as the problem was unique to that particular computer. I had tried several antivirus/spyware programs before the last one expired and I went sometime with no protection. You know how that ended up... Tried to fix with Norton 360. It removed most of the problems and everything was fine for a while. Some where along the line I lost my administrator rights (there is only one user account on this XP computer), lost my control panel and I get "access denied Please contact your administrator" or "access denied due to restrictions on this computer contact your administrator". Now the Norton software cannot connect to the Symatec site to update, nor can I bring up the Symantec site from IE (I don’t have a problem with any other web sites, and their server is not down – I can log on with other pc’s). I also get a recurring AV Systemcare popup. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

This is definitely a virus. I had to repair a computer with the same issues. No control panel anywhere. Could not "Run" and of the applets nor access any admin rights even logged in as admin via Safemode or CMD.

I will take a look at your file quick, and see just what is causing this issue and if it is remotely the same virus/trojan that I fixed.

Well for starters, there is one that peaked my immediate concern. You have this: REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe tied to Explorer, so anytime you fire up Windows, Explorer drags that baby with.

That is, from what I have read, the Lunii virus/Trojan.

For more info, check here: http://www.auditmypc.com/process/printer.asp

    Welcome to TSG....

First I would remove the version of HijackThis and all of its log fiels from your computer and install the new one below:

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Since I lost administrative rights, I can't uninstall programs. Should I still proceed with installing the recommended hijack this?

    Hi and welcome to TSG,

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have ComboFix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick comboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Please refer to the rules concerning malware removal.

    http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

Log Analysis/Malware Removal - In order to ensure that advice given to users is consistent and of the highest quality, those who wish to assist with security related matters must first graduate from one of the malware boot camp training universities or be approved by the administration as already being qualified. Those authorized to help with malware issues have a gold shield [IMG] next to their name and authorized malware removal trainees have a blue shield next to their [IMG] next to their names. Anyone wishing to participate in a training program should contact a Moderator for more information.

Please refrain from replying to security related matters on this forum until you have presented evidence to one of the moderators or admins here that proves you to be qualified to do so. If you are not yet qualified and interested in being trained, we will be glad to help you get enrolled at one of the free online training facilities. Just PM me or one of the other moderators that work Security and we'll point you in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation. :)
