    the thinkpad has a 2 part model #, something like Series 1400, Machine Type 2611-412

    Lenovo purchased IBM's non server computer lines within the past 10 years; perhaps within the past 5 yrs.

    Jerry:
    You could remove the hard disk drive from the thinkpad, connect it to a different computer & recover your data, or use a boot disk from various sources, such as KNOPPIX & copy your data to a flash drive; then run the system recovery program.

    On the bottom of the computer is usually a sticker the size of a mailing label. Sometiems the sticker loses legibility, or has come off. Check the invoice, perhaps.

    I saw a cool video in the W7 forum earlier this week about recoverying one's W7 product key, using a Linux based recovery disk.
