I am looking at doing an upgrade on my old system, so I am constrained by some existing hardware issues (i.e. DDR Ram and AGP Vid Card) that I just don't have the added budget to upgrade at this time. That being said, what board would you all recommend between the MachSpeed P4MSD-800 Via Chipset or Abit SG-80DC SiS 661 FX Chipset? I plan to run an Intel D830 CPU...I would appreciate everyones thoughts, so forth....

    Cheers,

wait until you have a bigger budget and work with what you have. AGP is dead and DDR is not far behind. Your best bet is to get a motherboard that will still be viable in the next couple years.

I would go Abit between those 2 choices, Intel MB is best for intel unless youre overclocking

    I worry about your cat...

jsmccuaig30, what is your budget? And are 3D games important? Do you already have the CPU and planning to OC it?

$120~140 or can get you an Nforce3 board and AMD64 CPU - with most likely onboard video. It'll be quite a bit faster withot any OCing. And it would be name-brand like MSI or ASUS.

And you can use your current DDR - IF its fast enough (DDR400 is needed by both intel and AMD anyways, so make sure you have this - not something likeDDR266)

If you already have the Intel D830 - then still stick with a ASUS or MSI - the price difference maybe as little as $10, which could save you lots of headaches in the future. But between the two you selected - take the ABIT over the otherone, easily.

Here is one from Newegg for $42 by MSI (AGP / DDR400 / LGA 775 / onboard VIA video) - which I would choose over abit. But make sure any of the board will work on your PSU (24pin connector) if required... and that they support your CPU.

that cat comment is too funny. Anyway i wasn't trying to be harsh. If i HAD to choose between the two i would go with Abit.
