Solved Mail Received Sounds in Gmail

Having had a great deal of (successful) help with a problem on my Gmail setup recently, I wonder if anyone can answer a question I have regarding Notifications of Incoming mail? I have set up my Gmail with a sound to advise me when any emails are received. This works perfectly when anything is open on my desktop (whether being used or not) but no sound is heard if nothing is in use. I am hesitant just to leave a program, etc., open, just so that I can hear any incoming mail notification sounds if I am not actually working on my PC. So my question is whether there are any steps I can take to hear a notifying sound even if nothing is open on the desktop? This is not a major worry for me, simply an enquiry as to whether it can be done.

Yes, after all that trouble with my Gmail over the past few days, once it had been corrected I also did have to reinstall the Notifier. At that stage I wondered if there was a way to have it function without actually having anything open, to get the alerts. But I don't have a huge amount of email traffic, so I will probably just leave Gmail open on my desktop and switch off my monitor when not using the PC. (Will try not to bother you again soon!!) Best regards. (Marking "Solved").
