Hello. I have fixed this before, but forgot how i did it! I am running XP pro, with 2nd edition installed. when I click on any mailto link, hotmail fails to open in the compose menu with the sender's address already filed out.
here's what the blank error page says:

    Server Error in '/' Application.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The resource cannot be found.
Description: 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Thanks for any and all help on this matter!

    Hi seattleguy36

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Program tab

In the Email: field does Hotmail show in the window?
If not, click on the drop down arrow and select Hotmail, if Hotmail is not an available option select Outlook Express.
Apply, OK, to save and close.

    Test the mailto: links
    ______________________________________________________________

If the above does not resolve the problem,

    With all windows closed.
    Start > Run
    Key in:
    "C:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg

Verify this is the path that msimn.exe is located and be sure to include the quotes.

    Then open Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > General tab,
and verify Outlook Express is your default messaging program at the bottom of the page.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Program tab
verify Outlook Express is showing in the E-mail window.

Let us know if this works or not.

Hotmail did have a problem with a new server. It was Hotmail.com now it's hotmail.msn.com. I have searched everywhere for a fix and here it is:

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/hmposturl.htm

I didn't know about a new REG_SZ, but I navigated to the hotmail in my registry and added a new string.

    It worked for me.

Glad there are some resourceful folks in this tech community! It was fun adding to the registry too...never done that before.

    Thanks again!
