    I'm having a problem with my puter. I'm running Windows XP. Yesterday, I wake up and go to get online, turn the puter on, and get this message:
    "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer." Error code: 0x8007007e
    I have a legit copy of XP, and have been running it for like 2 years.

    I went to this Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q310794) and tried to follow the instructions, but my computer doesn't have the registry keys it mentions.

    I found another article that talked about using 'svc /scannow', so I tried that, and I get a message about Windows File Protection, and it won't do the scan.

    Other articles have told me to use regsrv32 on various DLL's, done that, no help.

    So I decided to do a repair installation. Put my CD in, went to install, repair, and it starts off. Then I get 'asms' cannot be found, as for some reason, Windows could no longer "see" my cd-rom. I found an article that told how to edit some registry keys to fix this, did that and it seemed to work. But it gets to "Installing Devices, 34 minutes remaining" and will just hang there. I let it run twice last night for 45 minutes, nothing. I left it on last night when I went to bed, and I woke up, it was still on "Installing Devices, 34 minutes remaining". I tried again this morning by removing my CD-ROM and booting from my DVD-ROM, but this made no difference.

    So now, when I reboot my computer, it instantly goes to resume the repair installation and will hang at "Installing devices, 34 minutes remaining." What do I do now?

    You should have hung in with the original problem -- there was another "fix" for it which involved missing Windows updates components.

    First see this, and if you have a usb mouse or keyboard -- try switching to ps2 if you can:

    Are you able to reach the Desktop in Safe Mode? If so, see where the reinstall appears to be hanging by examining the setup logs;

    1. Locate the Windows XP SP2 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files:
    • Setupapi.log
    • Svcpack.log
    • Spuninst.log

    The log files are located in the %Windir% folder. For example, if Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder, the log files are located in the C:\Windows folder.

    You may want to also minimize the hardware setup and try another installation; just connect basic hardware such as the drive and display adapter -- remove any PCI cards other than the display driver -- and do not have attached any external USB devices.
