I have many things going on and wrong with my pc. I have a Dell Dimension 4100, Win ME and AOL High Speed online.

Recently, my AOL would not disconnect through normal procedures. After about 15 minutes of being on the computer, my mouse would slow down considerably. The mouse frequently requies a "second double-click" to activate a link, etc. I also had some issues a month back while reinstalling Norton Anti-Virus software--which, as I understand it, corrupted files on my pc and nearly disabled the whole thing. I somehow recovered, removed the Norton--and installed a new version. Today, I reinstalled AOL 9.0 "Optimized" in an attempt to fix the shut-down problems. It appears that worked--but now I get an error message on start up saying "shortcut to AOL companion.lnk refers to a location that is unavailable." I'm not too concerned about that--believe I can just shut down that through [run] msconfig. Anyhow, the new thing is that my PC [screen] will just go completely blank and (sometimes) will restart as if I just hit the reset button or unplugged the thing--this has me a bit concerned. I try to "scan disc" for errors, but the system repeatedly says that it has to restart due to programs running...and never finishes the process.

I could probably go on with more of the little annoyances, but I think you have the picture. What can I do to fix all this? What should I delete, reinstall, throw in the trash?

    Hi Allan, Welcome to TSG.

Not sure this will take care of your problem, but there are some things you can cleanup.

You can have HJT fix the following. Close your browser, check the items in HJT, click Fix.

    Reboot.

To run ScanDisk and Defrag without the constant restart problem boot your computer into safe mode, (hold down <Ctrl> as you boot), and run them both from there without opening anything else.

Either run Scandisk in "safe mode" or go into the Close Program box and end task everything in there, except Explorer and Systray, before you start.

You appear to have a bloated startup load. You should consider disabling some of those items from loading during startup.

My thoughts about AOL? (n)

I've tried to run scandisk through safe mode as well as shutting down all programs (sans explorer & systray) and it still says it has to restart and never finishes.

And now I'm getting the error message: Kernel32 caused a general protection fault in krnl 386.exe at 0001:000075a8

    There's always something else...

Have you tried System Restore to reinstate your computer to how it was before you started experiencing the problems?
To do this click the Start button then Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. follow the prompts and set it to the latest date shown in bold type when you know your computer was ok.

I tried system restore when I had previous problems with the Norton anti-vivus--didn't work then. The last date which I can restore to is close to that time frame and I wouldn't want to flash back anywhere near that. I know I could select a date prior to that--but I just don't think I want to go that route again.

The article instructs me to create an Me start-up disk first. Of course, my floppy drive doesn't seem to be working now--It just spins and reads nothing; can't even reformat.

Yeah, I've tried scandisk in safe mode--still won't complete without some kind of error (usually the "has to restart...").

And now when my computer starts up, it stops with something completly new--saying this and that are loaded/enabled or whatever and press <delete> to continue...

    So now what?
