Silly question but I need to ask it anyway: is the drive powered on? Can you hear it, or can you feel it vibrating?

Do you have access to another computer that you can test it on to see it it works there? As far as being a few years old, it may be that it has a problem. Is this a Maxtor Brand External or a Maxtor Drive you put in an external Enclosure?

Sounds like the external chipset is shot. You can probably connect the inner drive to a desktop and remove the files as an internal drive if you need to.
