I recently installed Mcafee virsus scan 6.0 & Mcafee Quick Clean. I was working with quick clean and deleted a file by mistake. I was in "application remnant cleaner". I was on the page where all the files are located (like windows explorer) and at the bottom where options after I highlighted a file. I highlighted the wrong file and clicked throw away. In looking in the instructions I saw where all deleted files were backed up but I don't know how to restore the file. Any suggestions.

Hiya

Is it not in your Recycle bin? If it is, just right click on it and choose Restore. If its not, how long ago did this happen? This may work.

Reboot to DOS and at the prompt type the following. There is a space before the /

scanreg /restore

and pick a date prior to when you deleted the file.

Eddie, I went offline and rebooted in dos and typed scanreg /restore 10/18/01. It gave me options on dates. Can you give me more detail as to what to do. I'm new at all this.

Okay

type just:

scanreg /restore

and no date after

and there will be a choice of about five dates to choose from. Just pick yours.

Does that help?

Thanks. Is there anyway that this could mess anything else up. By the way it was not in my recycle bin.

Not really.

What you are doing is restoring the system files, etc that may have been lost if you deleted something just recently. I don't use it for viruses but for just a file deletion..

btw, can you remember what the file was?

It was a folder. Visioneer. I went offline and tried what you said and after I highlighted the date and pressed enter, I got the message "system restore operation failed"

I tried again and was able to restore from another date but did not restore what I needed. Are you familiar with quick scan and is there anywhere else it could be.

Eddie,
Visioneer is a scanner and it has paperport software with it. I deleted a visioneer folder but it was the soft ware with the scanner. The scanner still worked. In the meantime I chatted with Mcafee online and they told me there was no way to retreive it. I wasn't convinced but I uninstalled what was left of Visioneer and reinstalled it. If you come up with anything later on I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks

TweakBoy,
Tell me more about Mcafee. I had no problem with ver 4.0 but I am having quite a bit of trouble with ver 6.0.

Hiya

When you reinstalled the software, did the file return? Also, is it working (software)?

The thing is with Mcafee is that it can take over your system. Thats why people don't seem to like it. I have AVP, updates daily, but costs.

I don't quite understand it but when I bought the visioneer scanner the paperport software came with it. I deleted the visioneer folder and didn't try the scanner so I assume it was not working either. Since I have reinstalled, scanner and software are working. What I was concerned about was the fact that I had hundreds of pictures in the folder. I had saved some others to zip disk but I lost a lot. They were paperport.max files. Any idea on how they might be retreived. I looked at the links and will try later but I am not real good at this and the regedit scares me a little. I don't want to mess anything else up. Thanks

back up the registry before you do any work on it. As for recovering the file, you might be able to do it via DOS.

Not good with DOS, so I'll hold out and see if someone else knows this stuff.

Well if you had Norton Unerase on you PC you could use it and get it back real easy.
Mine came with Norton SystemWorks.

But the New Norton AV has Norton Unerase on it.
So get the trial download from Norton and do a scan. The more you use you PC the less hopes your have in getting the files back. Now if the images are on another drive not run any programs that use that drive till you can scan for it.

Not sure how good it will work if Norton did not take an image of the drive so it knows what is gone. But hey try it.

If you know someone that has Norton SystemWorks I think it can be run from the CD also. I think you only get the DOS version of Norton Unerase if you run it from the CD and I don't know anything about DOS.
