This thing has been working quite well for some time, but over the last few days I have noticed some strange behaviors including freeze-ups and crashes.

Yes, I am STILL running an old HP Pavilon with

Windows Me (Complete RE-install March 08)
800mHz Pentium III processor
512mb SD RAM
30gb ultra DMA Hard Drive

The System Properties performance tab shows the following info...

Memory 511.0 MB of RAM

System REsources 63% free (THIS USUALLY SHOWS ABOUT 86% FREE. CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IS SUDDENLY EATING UP
THE OTHER +20% ?? )

File System 32-bit

Virtual Memory 32-bit

Disc Compression Not Installed

PC Cards (PCMCIA) No PC Card Sockets are installed

Anti-virus is AVG 7.5 524 (current)..... No Evidence of Infections

Spybot S&D 1.6.0 (current)............... No Evidence of any Threats

HJT Installed (No changes made using it, but I did save a base file for reference at time of original install & see some new stuff of both known and unknown origins)

As for error messages I did get one when trying to update Spybot S&D, but their forums seem to indicate the message not to be much of a concern, but here it is just incase you know more on it....

Application Error
Exception ElnvalidCast in module SDUPDATE.EXE at 000730EB.
Invalid class typecast

The only other thing of significance that comes to mind is that several months ago I had a MS type pop up message that said I had been infected with the "zlob virus". The popup was not an AVG type warning and AVG did not turn up anything unusual upon an immediate nor subsequent scans.

A check of MS-dos for back orifice/open ports seems to be clear from what little I understand about that.

Thanks in advance for all help insight and assistance.

Sincerely
Gary B.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Everything listed there with a checkmark next to it is automatically loading during startup and running in the background.

Except for:

ScanRegistry scanregw.exe

SystemTray SysTray.Exe

StateMgr StateMgr.exe

AVG7_CC AVGCC.EXE

AVG7_EMC AVGEMC.EXE

AVG7_AMSVR AVGAMSVR.EXE

most of the other entries, if not all of them, can be unchecked and disabled from loading and running.

This site will assist you in researching the other entries.

Note: After you edit the startup list and restart your computer, a small window will appear on the desktop to advise you that your computer is in selective startup mode. Select not to have it display that message again.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I'm real partial to the older HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario desktops.

You didn't mention the model number of that Pavilion, but I can tell from its processor type and speed that it's quite capable of running Windows XP, especially if you add another 256 - 512 MB of RAM to it. It's something that you might consider. Windows ME has gone the way of the dinosaurs, and you're going to find it very difficult to get new hardware and software that works with Windows ME.

Went through the start up items as you suggest, nothing outstanding there that was new or unexpected.

Not much in the start up that I could eleminate as I have always kept that pretty skinny, but there were one or two items I can live without, like having an icon display in the taskbar for on the fly resolution changes.

The Machine is an HP Pavilon 8754C,
it is holding 512mb of RAM with no more slots available,
so I don't know how I could add anything more there.

You also mentioned I might consider running XP since "Windows ME has gone the way of the dinosaurs" I (perhaps incorrectly) thought XP to be on the fast track to (a short term) extinction as well. If so, is there really a worth while benefit in switching?

These startup entries definitely don't need to load during startup and run in the background:

TaskMonitor

PCHealth

LoadPowerProfile
(both entries with that name)

QuickTime Task

Scheduling Agent

KB918547

KB891711

Taskbar Display Controls

SpybotSD TeaTimer

Hi favalee,

If I didn't say so before, "Thanks for your help!"

Just read your last post on definetly not need for start up.

KB918547
KB891711

Are you certain about these 2, because the info I found at the link you provided indicate them to be REQUIRED Microsoft Security Patches.

Had already gotten rid of

TaskMonitor
PCHealth
QuickTimeTask
SchedulingAgent
Taskbar Display Controls
SpybotSD TeaTimer

Regards,
Gary B

You can leave the 2 "KB" entries checked if you want to, but they're not really needed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you're happy with ME and it does what you need it for, go ahead and stick with it.

XP has been out for almost 7 years and the SP3 upgrade for it was recently released. It's the most popular, and in my opinion the best operating system to come out since the beginning of Windows. Microsoft will continue to provide support and critical updates for it until 2014. It runs a little slow in my HP Pavilion 8565C, but it does what I need it for, and it's much more stable and problem-free to use than ME or 98SE.

Oh...2014, I didn't realize they would continue to support XP that far out. For some reason I had the impression we were just a few months away from the end of support for XP. Knowing it will be supported for at least 4 more years makes using it a bit more worth consideration.

I see AVG, HJT, and Spybot in your specs.

I don't see a firewall; or did I overlook it? That could be a major problem!

Don't currently have one. I looked for a version that would work with Win ME and didn't find one.

Hi Ekim68,

I've not had any problems until the past week or two. Everybody talks about Win ME being so problematic, but that has not been my experience and I log lots of hours online.

There are a couple vendors I subscribe to who don't provide support for their software on WinME once they update to XP/Vista. Of course for those that I already have their drivers/software installed and working there seems to be no problems. Unfortunately, I expect that is bound to change sooner or later as they continue to make changes and update their systems to match the newer Windows Systems.

As a repairman I try to keep things going as long as I can...It's a given that newer equipment won't accommodate older OS's, but, the truth is, a lot of the older computers, P-3 and above, are lasting longer...And that's good news for a repairman. And, BTW, usual maintenance should involve cleaning the fans in the computer once a year...;)

Wokndadog,

YOU NEED A FIREWALLll! I'd be willing to bet this is your problem.

You can download from ZoneAlarm's Release History

The final version to run on 98/ME without issue is version 6.0.667.000.

Remember, an outdated firewall is better than no firewall at all.

Hi sdfox7 & dlsayremn,

Thanks for the info on where to look. I had checked oldversion.com once before when looking for a zone alarm verson that would work, but I did not have any luck. With the info you both gave I should be able to find a firewall that will work.
