I recently downloaded Windows Media Player 11 and have since discovered that I can no longer hear music that is embedded on web site pages. What is REALLY interesting about this problem is that if I open the web site page, then click on a music file on my computer the media player plays the music that is on the web page NOT the music I clicked on in my computer....if I close the web page while the music is playing it reverts to playing the music on my computer that I clicked on. Weird, uh???

Can someone please help me solve this problem so that I may hear music on web pages again?

Thank you for your anticipated help.

I wonder if your issue with Windows Media Player 11 not playing sound might be related to discussion in this thread:
    http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/541727-no-mono-sound-windows-media.html

where Windows Media Player 11 does not appear to play mono sound for some of us. When the sound is played through another application, it plays fine.

The problem, in my case, is not embedded or not, but mono sound or not. CNN video files, no longer play sound for me since installing windows media player 11. Here is an example:
http://bowendirectory.com/?p=7&ID=261&d=1 (have to click play button to start)

If you can hear sound in the above example, but not in www.cnn.com video files, we may have the same issue.

Thank you for your reply Denver Dave. However, it doesn't look like its the same problem as I heard sound on both the links you gave me.

Am I the only one having a problem with embedded music or more precisely midi files on web pages???

krys53: We now have exactly the same issue. With help from albertio in the General Player forums, I now can change whether I can hear mono sound in the external player by changing the setting in tools / options / devices / sound from Default Direct Sound Device to DirectSound: Realtek HD Audio rear output (realtek works with mono sound).

I can't help wondering if the issue with embedded players might be related. I can try to hear a www.cnn.com mono video clip and not hear the sound, but right click on the video, get the location and hear it just fine with the player.

Also, originally, I had problems with the embedded players recognizing the WMP and added 3 files to the Program Files / Windows Media Player directory. I think the 3 files were:
    npdrmv2.dll
    npwmsdrm.dll
    npdsplay.dll
replacing these with fresh copies had no effect, but I'll double check by rebooting - no effect by replacing and in fact even renaming - has no effect and npdrmv2.dll seems to be automatically re-created if I rename it.

If changing the sound device from default to Realtek makes a difference for external player, doesn't this imply that my default is not set to Realtek?

Issue does seem to just be with Mono files for embedded players now.
