I believe I have some sort of virus that has overwritten the original media player files... i think wmplayer.exe(which is running in system processes) is corrupt. Although I keep rolling back to a previous version and then reinstalling it doesn't work. Can anyone offer insight on how to correct this? I received a codec needed message and clicked yes and it was all over from there.

Hi, Yup, that would do it.

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi, Here is what to do now:

Copy these steps to a Notepad text file and save it as steps.txt to your desktop, or print them, as you will not be able to get online while working in Safe Mode (and, please do
not use Safe Mode with Networking for this fix!)

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Post this new report log from SmitFraud Fix and a new HJT log.

    Next:

I see you have AVG Antispyware installed....start the program,
    • On the main screen under Your Computer's security
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive. (What shows is n/a =that's OK)
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive. (same it should look like n/a)
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
    [
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Reboot your computer TO Safe Mode. Here's how:
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    ______________________________
    1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and
UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
    • 2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
    • 3.If you were scanning now, you would Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
    • 4. When the scan finished you'd be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?
    • 5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans.
    • Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
    • Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
    • 6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

We also have to use a Rootkit scan, so be prepared tomorrow.

Hi Byteman, I am at work until approximately noon today. I will reply with the information you asked shortly after that. A couple of things to note, I also have a post about ctpmon virus in the forums. I have already completed several of your above steps, along with a few additional ones. I actually removed AVG, and installed Zone Alarm Internet Suite. I have been able to rid myself of the above problem by rebooting, disabling system restore, rebooting in safe mode, deleting win32 problem files, running smitfraudfix, and then rebooting. I also used a rootkit remover to get rid of something called wuy32. But still having the media player problem, along with something stopping me from accessing anti-virus websites, ie avg, techguys, etc...

    Hi Byteman,

Yeah, I think most of it is gone now, but still media player trouble and some type of hidden redirect page going on. When i log onto techguys.org, it will only let me see the first page, when i logon, it shows page unavailable. Same things with anti-virus sites... what can i use to track this and my media player problem down.

    Ryan.

    GMER.exe

I found that as a suggested rootkit removal tool for a similar post with my problems for ctpmon virus isssue... thought i'd try it.

Hi, Since you used Gmer and I hope successfully, I think we can take your word-- have not seen any logs such as AVG though.

You said you removed AVG, did you mean you set it not to start up- there is some items showing AVG in the last HJT log is why I ask.

I'd like to see a log from AVG Antispyware if you can, when you have time if now is not good.

The steps are back in the thread, it does have to be run to scan in Safe Mode, update it first though.

Or, if you have been scanning, and not seen anything detected, just try some online scanners.

Do you need locations of or steps to use Panda online, Kaspersky, or Bit Defender scans?

I actually flat-out uninstalled AVG. I was told in another thread way too many anti-detection programs. I chose to install zonealarm. I will install AVG and run in safe mode. Last time i ran it, it wasn't finding anything major... I do know how to run the online scanners, which is the best for me?

Hi, No need to run AVG then, since you updated what I needed to know.

Too much of these programs is a hassle, and you did OK.

Try HOSTER to see if it is a HOSTS file redirect.

    http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

    Extract to the desktop.

Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
    Exit Program.
Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself
