The first and most important task is to install an anti-virus. Otherwise you will very likely, at the worst, be reinstalling again and at the least you will have serious problems.

Is the sound integrated on the motherboard or a separate card.
If it is integrated the speakers will connect on the main I/O plate ie: bellow the mouse, keyboard, monitor and ethernet., presuming it is a desktop.

If the sound card is separate, then it will NOT be on the I/O plate but will be below there, nearer to the base of the tower.

If it is integrated go to the motherboard site and download the driver for the sound.
UNLESS IT IS A BRANDED COMPUTER ie; Dell Hp etc.
In which case go to that particular site and download the driver from there.

Like Macboatmaster said, that should be the first thing you do before worrying about sound. Below are links to a couple of my personal favorites (free).

    Microsoft Security Essentials

    Avast! Antivirus
    ----------------------------------------------

    Click Start.

In the search bar type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter. (In Windows XP, type this in Run).

Click the + next to the pane Sound, Video and Game Controllers so it expands, showing all installed hardware.

Take a screenshot of this window and attach the file in your next post.

[I prefer screenshots, but if this is impossible or would require a tremendous amount of time and effort for some reason, an exact report of the mentioned entries would suffice. Include any ! X or ?'s next to the entries.]

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

that link is merely a way of ID the sound card.
It uses hardly any resources and in any case can if you wish be uninstalled afterwards. Is was only 4.2Mb and by now we could have given you the link to the driver all being well.
However I will wait to hear from you
