I recently discovered that my memory controller's maximum module size is 256Mb,
I am running 384 Mb RAM

Is this even talking about the same thing?
    What does this mean?
How can I fix it? (if it needs to be fixed)

No it's not the same thing.

Your motherboard will only support 256meg dimms max per slot, now you can put a 256meg dimm in every memory slot supposedly, so if you have two slots you would be good to go at 512meg installed, three would be 768 meg installed, etc.
