Hi there,

I recently got up to date with the modern world and got a cable modem installed. I started downloading music files immediately, all into Win Media Player. My total library is about 6.6 GB right now. My c: drive Properties tab says I have 28.6 GB of total space and 22.7 is currently used.

What has started happening is that when I use WMP to play music, it sucks up all my computer's resources/memory, and I can't really do anything else on the computer because all other programs run way, way, way too slow. This stops as soon as I pause or stop playback. This has only happened since I started increasing my music collection via downloads. What can I do to release my computer from the music playback "freeze"? Is this a question of increasing my hard drive memory, or.......?

Thanks for reading!

My RAM is 768 MB. As far as the virtual memory settings, I have no idea how to answer that question, can you tell me how to locate the settings? Thank you for your time!

Right click on My Computer . . select Properties . . Then the Advanced tab . . then Settings button, then Advanced again . . at the bottom of that screen it should show your virutal memory ( page file ) size . . If you are getting low on memory errors, you might want to set it to allow Windows to manage.

"it sucks up all my computer's resources/memory"

Are you "guessing" that this is what is happening, or have you actually checked to see what available ram is?

And, just to clarify, when you use the term "memory" do you mean "ram" or do you mean "hard drive space".

Regardless, I would download, install and run HiJackThis and copy/paste the LOG file that it creates, back here in a reply post for review.

If your computer already has too many programs running in the background, running WMP on top of that might be just enough to put it over the edge.

Do what WhitPhil advised and post a HijackThis log here. It'll show us what programs are running in the background.

Lastly, yes, I guessed that the "memory" was being "sucked up". You can tell by my lack of clarity that I'm new and befuddled...

With 768 of RAM. . conventional wisdom is that the page file should be set Minimum at 1152 and Max at 2304.

Uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger, then delete its folder from within the C:\Program Files\Logitech folder. It's not needed. Read here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I suspected, there are several programs running in the background that don't need to be running.

Here is one of the biggest resource hogs (and you don't need ir) :

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

That's definitely one that needs to be disabled from running in the background.

I count at least NINE that should be disabled, and possibly more.
