I'm looking at the perfomance panel in the desktop sidebar and it says my memory usage is around 42%-47%, with no programs running (other than the background processes and the sidebar). This freaks me out a little since I have a gig of memory. I can't figure out why so much memory is being used. I've ran Ad-Aware, spybot search and destroy, and Norton AV. All with the updated definition files. Here's my hijack this logfile (it sure looks long to me). Can anybody help me figure out what the deal is (or is it normal)?

    Thanks.

    Interstate,

    Check this site: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/whitepapers/paper8/

There are some links at the bottom of the page that will take you to Process Lists that allow you to look up the source/purpose of most any app running on your machine.

For instance I saw Gearsec.exe in your list and looked it up and I'd say it doesn't need to be active.

There are many others that are just resource users....unless they are being USED at the moment. Like MMTASK.EXE, are you playing music right then?

If you look at the Apps/processes that are in your STARTUP, you may be shocked. Use MSCONFIG and review the lists....uncheck those you do not REALLY need running all the time....like MusicMatch.
