Right click the program shortcut select Properties/Compatibility set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP sp3 and see if it will work.

Have you tried reinstalling the game? I have at times had to manually install *.dll files to C:\windows\system and sometimes to C:\windows\system32\ to get older programs to work.
Doing a search on C:\ drive I have 11 copies of that file however none are being used by my system.

Mfc42.dll is a system .dll in Windows, so I think the error is saying that info placed in the .dll by this program during installation is not formatted correctly or maybe you have the wrong version of the software installed. If you are running a 32 bit system, could this be 64 bit software? I've seen incompatibilities of this type before.

Could you possibly contact the developer of the program? I have had alot of success in the past doing this, so maybe it would work for you. I see there is a link to contact the developer on the download site for the program here if you would like to do so:

Yes it is a system file for 98 and XP, not sure about vista but in my win 7 it is not used. I agree with contacting the developer for a way to correct the problem.
