Ever since I installed Vista Home Basic in my PC, my Mic (normal wired type) does not work. It was working perfectly earlier with Windows98. The connected Mic is not recognised at all under Sound/Recording - it says "No audio devices are installed" ("Show Disabled/Disconnected Devices" - both are checked).
I understand many have faced this problem and have solved it by updating the correct Sound Card Driver for Vista. If this is indeed true, can someone help me as to how to do it?
Very often it is best to get updated vista drivers directly from the original manufacturers - this was definately the case with Sony camcorders. So i hope you know who manufactured your sound card - then visit their web site for vista updates.
I looked up the details of the sound card in the Device Manager. It is described as "High Definition Audio Device" - I guess it is an integral sound card that comes with the Motherboard. I tried looking for updated driver by right-clicking on the device and choosing the "Update Driver Software..." option. After an online search, it reported that the presently installed driver is the latest updated version!
What do I do now?
(I forgot to mention that I have no problems with "playing back" sounds; problem is only with recording sound through Mic etc.)
If you open up your case you can check the make and model number of your sound card. Then go to the manufacturers web site and download the driver update for your device - Note that you should read any text/help file which comes with the driver download in case it stresses that you need to remove the existing installed drivers prior to running any update (personally i do this anyway when there seams to be a conflict)
You should also check which service pack you are running under in Vista (currently Vista SP 2 is the latest) By the time that SP1 was released Vista had resolved most driver issues with old/new hardware.
I opened the case to look for the sound card. There was no separate card (as expected!). As I had noted earlier, the sound card is a "built-in" card, with the Motherboard.
The Motherboard is INTEL Desktop Board D945GCL Essential Series.
Note that you should read any readme file which comes with your drivers as it might be a requirement to uninstall your old ones before installing the new.
I just installed the latest drivers for my PC's Motherboard following the steps outlined by you.
My OS being Vista32, I selected the software - Chipset: Intel® Chipset Device Software for Intel® Desktop Boards, Ver. # 9.1.1.1015 dated 7/12/2009 from INTEL's Download Center.
However, it has not solved my audio-recording (Mic) problem!
Can you please check what service pack you have installed - just go to control panel, then click system and wouy should get a window telling you "Windows Basic Information" - what service pack does it say?
The reason for the delay is - I am struggling to get the Service Pack/s installed. When I checked, I found that, despite many tries, the "Automatic Update" failed to install SP1 in my OS. When I tried to instal by downloading SP1 Standalone from MS Site, it again reports an internal error. I am still in the process of troubleshooting - hope I would be successful in installing SP1 and any further SP's as well.
I will then check my audio and report. Kindly bear with me!!
However, both the above web addresses led me nowhere!!
Can Ditchester (or someone else) please come to my rescue?
