Microsoft bogus emails re critical patch updates

I am being swamped with what I thought were actual Microsoft emails regarding critical security downloads and each email that was scanned contains a virus.

What is going on? The email looks so" Microsoft "official. I cannot tell that it is phoney but thank goodness I have anti-virus installed.

I want to block these emails now as I have several from this bogus site...If I filter Microsoft, I may miss a real important update.

Hi Jamzz, and welcome to TSG.. :)

To the best of my knowledge, you will never get e-mail notification of updates from Microsoft. So unless you regularly send error reports etc. and then obviously need to see the reply, I think you are safe enough in filtering out Microsoft messages.

I'd be grateful if anyone else could confirm this though.

Cheers

It's not just Microsoft: lots of people get duped by emails claiming to be from Symantec, McAfee, Zonelabs, The US Government...

Basically, take everything you see online with a pinch of salt. The world is not so altruistic that people you have never even met before will email you to tell you about the latest killer virus which wiped your Hard Drive, drains your car batteries and violates your cat, and that installing this app will stop it.

It's a virus, guarunteed.

I received one today. ...

The email said it is from "Microsoft" security@microsoft.com
Subject: Use this patch immediately !

The email says:

Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!

File attachment: patch.exe

Here is what my email virus scan showed:

A file attached to this email was removed because it was infected with a virus.

Result: Virus Detected

Virus Name: W32.Dumaru@mm

File Attachment: patch.exe

Attachment Status: deleted

- Be careful and always scan all emails before you open them!!
