Hi, my name is Rhonda and I was wondering if you would be able to tell me what would cause microsoft excel to flash. The cells and anything that is typed into them flashes hilighted off and on constantly. You can't highlight a certain section if you needed to because it just goes back and forth between normal and highlighted all the time. The version is between 2003-2007. Please advise, thankyou!

    Open the workbook.
Select all the cells by clicking on the Left top Header
    With all the cells selected.
On the top menu Format -> Style.
This will open a new window.
    Check the Style Names.
Does one show something like Flash or Flashing ?
If so then delete the Style Name and save the wookbook and reopen it and see if the Flashing has stopped.

I tried what ypu said to do but when I clicked to hilight all the cells it wouldn't let me go into any of the menus. It wouldn't even let me shut down excel. When I clicked on the red X to close the window it said, 'cannot close excel' and I had to bring up the task manager to close it. This is a different computer than the one I am using. The one that is having the problem is my sisters. I don't know if that little bit of info helped, lol. Do you have any more suggestions? Thankyou for helping. :)

What I mean by the Left Header is left of Column A and above Row 1 there is a blank spot.
Click on it with your mouse and this will select all Rows and Colums in the spreadsheet.
I'm not sure what you have as your Headers ( A) and as Row Names (1)
I looks like someone created a style and is running a Macro when you open the Spread Sheet.

You need to remove the Style to get the flashing to stop.

yup I knew what you meant. I clicked in that blank spot and it hilighted the whole worksheet but then when I went to the format menu the whole excel program froze. I couldn't open the format menu to even get to the styles. I tried everything on my own computer to make sure I knew what you meant before I tried it on my sisters computer. Mine didn't freeze up like hers did. If I try to get out of excel by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner it won't close. I have to bring up the task manager to do it and that isn't normal either.:( Could excel be corrupt? Her computer is seven years old and has a few issues. I appreciate your time and efforts to help me with this, thankyou. (y)

You may want to try to repair the installation of Microsoft Office.
If you have the installation CD.
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
    Open Add Remove Programs.
Select Microsoft Office and then press Change.
This will let you repair the installation.

I went to add/remove programs and did the repair but that didn't work so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it's doing the same thing. After reinstalling it though, it said microsoft office has stopped working properly and referred us to some updates that didn't work either. We reinstalled it off the disk so I'm wondering why all of a sudden it 'stopped working properly'. Could it have more to do with the computer itself, being it has other issues too, rather than Microsoft office? The computer is 7 years old. I am not using that one, it belongs to my sister. Thankyou for helping (y)
