Dear tech gods, please answer my humble prayer.

I'm currently running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Inspiron D530S. Nearly four days ago, I began to get the following error message right after I started up my computer:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
    abnormal program termination
    [okay]

(sometimes it says more, but that's the jist of it)

I've also gotten alerts saying that the following have crashed and need to close (and if I want to sent an error report to Dell):
    dsca.exe
    d13a.exe
    windows explorer
    launcher.exe
(for Dell Documentation and Support Launcher)

It all started after my computer got the latest batch of updates (which included IE8). I was trying to connect a new modem. There was a Verizon disk involved as well. A day or two before the problem first arose, I would turn on the computer, click Firefox, and wait forever because the program wouldn't open.

I've tried everything I've read up on in threads of people with similar problems:

-Running a virus/spyware scan. I've run Norton and Dell several times and it usually doesn't turn up anything, and when it does (the last few times it says it's detected viruses/trojans/cookies much after I scanned) they get taken care of, I restart my system, and nothing changes.

-Restoring my system to a previous time when I didn't have this problem. I go through all the motions and restart my computer, but when it starts up again, it tells me that the restore was not complete because it wasn't able to do it. I don't know why this happens.

-Replacing faulty components with the Windows XP (SP2) CD (start>run>command>sfc /scannow) . I don't even think it found anything wrong, and when I tried to reinstall Windows XP, it told me that my version was a later one, and therefor couldn't do it. (I think it's because of all the updates).

-Searched for "Free Download Manager". I read that some people found this file in their computer (which came along with Java, or something) and once removed, their problem went away. I couldn't find it when I searched for it.

-Deleted anything Yahoo! related, disabled all the toolbars/add-ons for Internet Explorer and uninstalled Internet Explorer. This also did nothing.

Please help me. I'm going crazy. I click the "okay" button, and the alert window will go away, taking with it my desktop icons, and the start button, along with the taskbar, leaving only my wallpaper. Sometimes they come back (along with the alert window), and sometimes they don't. Either way, the damned alert always comes back.

    Here's my HJT Log:
