I'm looking into purchasing the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, but my monitor doesn't have a USB port. I read online that the USB is only for power, and was wondering if I could just use a USB extension cord and plug the USB part into the wall instead of the monitor, with the HDMI plugged into the monitor.

Hello and welcome to TSG!!

If, indeed, the USB is just used for power, you should certainly be able to power it with a small brick and USB cable of the proper type, likely USB-A to Micro USB.
