Microsoft Word will not open my Word documents when I click on a Word document icon, what happens instead is:

I click on a Word document icon saved on my computer.
Microsoft Word opens to a gray screen and does not open the document I clicked on.

If I open Word first and then click on new blank document on the toolbar and then click on the Word document I want to open, then it will open. But this is a royal pain, sometimes I have to navigate deep into folders to re-open a document after I've done the above to enable Word.

I have reinstalled the program, replaced the normal.dot template by a with a new normal.dot but nothing seems to work.

I would appreciate someone's help with this. Microsoft Customer support has me running in circles.

What version of Word are you using? Have you tried re-registering the program using the /regserver command?

Keep in mind that there may be several Normal.dot files so make sure you delete all occurences of them.

Also, do you have any anti-virus software with Microsoft Office Plug-Ins?

    Hello Rollin'

I am using Office 2003. I have not tried re-registering the program using the /regserver command. How do I go about this?

I am using Spybot and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Do these have the Word plug-ins?

    Thanks for your response

    With Word closed:

    1. Click on Start, then Run.

    2. Type winword /r (with the space), press Enter.

    Andy,

I tried your suggestion below...I got a dialog box saying that Office was intalling the components then the dialog box closed after confirming installation.

I started word and still have the problem of not being able to open documents by clicking on the icons.

    Thanks

Dreamboat's advice was thrilling, alas, thrills can be short lived. The icon opening problem returned upon my opening and closing the program again. Any more ideas? Thanks for your untiring help. I'll keep checking dreamboat's site in the meantime, searching for a solution.

What worked? Renaming the normal.dot? Or dumping the registry key?

Are you opening a certain document each time? Could that document be screwing it up?

Do you have some other application that opens DOC files? Like OpenOffice?

You may need to completely uninstall Word and reinstall.

Do it the same way as dumping the registry key, except:

    --also delete normal.dot
--also delete the Word folder under C:\program files\microsoft office
