    Hello,
When using Microsoft Update, there is a security update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 R2 SP1 for x64 systems
( that would be my machine) - KB2518869 & KB2572077. I download them, yet the install fails and the following " Error Encountered Code 80073712" is called out.

1st I am not knowledgable of the purpose of .NET and its workings so cannot talk intelligently about it.
AND I have tried to down load this a few times ( even with some tech support help from AVG ) and they too
    could not crack the code.

So, is there and answer and should I pursue this till I get the down load ? Any help is appreciated.
    thank you,

boot into "safe mode with netwoking" try download and save to desktop,if download successful try install by double-click to open.if this fails then go to microsoft UK download center, type the KB****** number in the serch box and try download from here.

    hello

thank you for the info... just an FYI the down loading is not the issue. It is the installation part ... I then get the error listed in post 1 above.

    thanks

Go to Programs and features and select any "Microsoft net framework" items you see. Click "Install/Change" and select the option to repair. It will take a while. You should repeat this with any Net framework items in the list. Reboot and try the update again.

    Hello Davehc.

No success. Let me inform you what I did.
    1. Opened Programs and Features
    2. I accessed 'Turn Windows Features On/Off'
    3. I checked boxes that were open for .Net Features 3.5.1 - they were:
    a. Windows Communications Foundations HTTP actions
    b. Windows Communications Foundations HTTP non-actions

The system went to work , yet said some of the components were NOT installed.

    4. I rebooted the system
    5. Went back and looked at these two boxes mentioned i.e. 3a. and 3b. - they were no longer check marked.

    6. I then went to Microsoft update and chose only one .NET component to install ( as I have been having issues with 2 of the updates, so I just picked 1).

    7. The update down-loaded; it tried to install , and then upon its completion it once again said
encountered error code 80073712 ( same that was documented on post 1 above)

So that is where I am at.

    Any ideas ?
And can you or another forum member inform me what does .NET contribute to my computer or application ? My undersanding is, some apps take advantage of this framework ( yet I could not tell you which ones).

    thanks

this did not work as I followed the directions and reported the results in the post #6 above.
THat is, in UNINSTALL there is no .NET to select and un-install. It is only found in TURN WINDOWS FEATURES ON OR OFF. I see it there and followed the directions offered by davehc with no success occuring.

hiya, in Windows features the .net 3.5 is comes with windows 7,try this,go to windows update, bottom left click on installed updates, look down the list for the two KB******* Nos,select both and uninstall.reboot and try installing either fresh from microsoft or ones you downloaded earlier, try in safe mode with antivirus turned off
