I was wondering if anyone had heard of or ever used Midspan or any POE (power over Ethernet) devices in their networks. I'm currently doing a project for my class in ITT and was looking at them as a possible way to go for downtime prevention... Any ideas?

I looked over their website and one of the products. Don't see anything special about them. They seem to provide PoE switches which give you some small level of management capability but none of the expected features one would expect from a managed switch. They do provide PoE switches that can supply power greater than the mainstream spec of 802.3af. But I don't know many applications where a device will draw more than 15.4W of power. I have a GigE PoE switch from Netgear (GS748TP) and it provides PoE across all 48 ports in addition to all the usual features one would expect from a managed switch.

So I don't understand why you would design around this particular vendor especially since I don't see anything special or compelling about them.
