    I recently upgraded my mother's inspiron 1545 to win 7 x64.
Now, I see there are certain drivers missing - it doesn't recognize its' monitor, the cdrom is not listed, some function keys not working and I suppose there are more.
Is there a single tool that can scan the hardware and see which drivers are missing or do I have to locate them manually?
Where can I find a list of the hardware that's not compatible with the new OS?

    Thanks!

I got the OS from a friend.
In order to use the compatibility tool, how do I locate the models of the hardware parts?
Also, how do I update a driver for a device that's not listed in the device manager (cdrom, camera. etc)?

I believe, Anna, that Dell computers come with their own proprietary Operating System Disk, and a regular Windows 7 disk would not have those drivers.

Lance's question arises from the implication of breach of the Windows 7 license. If the "OS from a friend" was in a sealed, original retail box, and you were to take sole ownership of it - then there might be no question... Your choice of words "I got it from a friend" is unfortunate....

What's the 7-character service tag/express service code number on the sticker?

What's the complete version of Windows that's listed on the Microsoft COA sticker that has the 25-character serial number?

OK! From that reply i would surmise your friend got Win7 from a torrent site and is cracked. Not uncommon. Please correct me if I am incorrect, and I will apologize.

    before further support
would you please do the following
    Windows Validation
Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:
    • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
    • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
    • Click "Continue"
    • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
    • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard. Note nothing will appear to happen
    • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

    Dell-Kris,

I have removed the content of your post. Please do not offer assistance when a moderator is questioning the validity of the operating system until it's been determed that it's genuine and therefore OK to proceed.
