Missing file: hpfinst.dll

According to my Norton Works software I'm missing a file:

hpfinst.dll

Norton Works can't fix this "medium rated" problem.

Can anyone tell me how to find this file and get it working again. I've not really noticed any problems although my computer never has run on all 8 cylinders since I bought it in November 2000. For instance I can't watch videos online; my system restore doesn't work. But, I've been able to do most things I need to do with this computer. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I did notice an improvement when I upgraded to Windows Me.

Thanks for your help in finding my missing file.

I appreciate the help. However I am still very much a novice. I am with a computer very much like I am with a car... I can drive it and change the oil and tires but don't ask me to do any mechanic work on it.

Yes I do have a HP Deskjet 952C Printer. I figured that missing file hpfinst.dll had to do with installing my computer by the letters used in the file name. But the other things you mentioned I don't quite understand.

Can I go to the website you mentioned and download the missing file?

My printer was bought in November 2002.

Thank you very much for your time and help,

Paul

Yes, click on the above link, then scroll down the list to hpfinst.dll
Left click it, and you will then be prompted to save or open the file.
Select "save" and download the zip file to a safe/known folder on your hard drive.
When the download is done, click "Open"
The zip file you just downloaded will then open in a new folder

From the "File" menu, select "Extract All"
The Extraction Wizard will then appear.
Click "Next"
Under "Files will be extracted to this directory", click the "browse" button.
Browse to:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

You can reach this folder via:
My Computer -> C: Drive -> WINDOWS -> SYSTEM32

Click "Okay"

* NOTE: actually, you can just type it in, without the need to "browse"

With C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 now displayed in the "Files will be extracted to..." field
Click "Next"

And you're done

Now this is assuming C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 is the correct place for this file, of which I'm pretty certain it is (85% of all system .dll files are found here)

Here's a direct link to the download:
http://www.helpy.com.ar/dll/h/hpfinst.zip

Let us know how you get on . . .

EGG, what a thorough & helpful reply.I have been struggling for over a week to download Psapii.dll & being a novice too would have given my last two front teeth for that info.
Needless to say, its printed out for future guidance, thank you.

Thank you for your response and help. I followed your instructions explicitly and I successfully downloaded and installed the file "hpfinst.dll"

However, I ran my Norton Works program again and it still shows that file a missing. Here is how Norton states the problem exactly...

Problem:
Missing File: "C:\Program Files\hp deskjet 950c Series\hpfiui.exe cannot access a necessary file, "hpfinst.dll"

So now I have the file but Norton cannot find it.

What do you think of this?

Thanks again for help. It's most appreciated.

Aah . . .
well I did say I wasn't 100% certain where hpfinst.dll is meant to be placed.

Try moving / copying it to this folder:

C:\Program Files\hp deskjet 950c Series\

The simplest way to do this is via:
My Computer -> C: Drive -> Windows -> System32
View Menu -> Arrange Icons By -> Name
Scroll down for & hi-lite the first file (ie. not a sub-folder)
Hit "H"
You should now be able to find hpfinst.dll quite easily
Hi-lite it
Edit Menu -> Copy
Hit the Up or Back arrow on the toolbar until you arrive back at the C: Drive root dir
Open "Program Files" folder
Then "hp deskjet 950c Series" folder
Edit Menu -> Paste

Or simply download the zip again and this time extract it to:
C:\Program Files\hp deskjet 950c Series

If Norton still gives the error message, then we still need to find the correct location for hpfinst.dll

There's a good chance that it may need to go here:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\spool\drivers\w32x86

Alas, I don't have a HP printer, so I could do with someone who's got one to come to this thread and confirm the location of their hpfinst.dll

Could someone in the know please also confirm whether we need to register this dll

start -> run
regsvr32 hpfinst.dll

Please bear with us vPaulL, we'll get there in the end :)
