When booting 98, a file can't be found - chddpw.bin. I guess a leftover from an unistalled app. Cancelling a few panels is all that's need, but it is annoying.
I tried stepping thru w/ F8 at the start, but could find no reference. How do I cancel the search? Thank you.

Hi willumc, Welcome to TSG!! :)

You should post a log for us to review.
Click on this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.

Close out any open browsers and launch the program.
Click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile.
The log will open in Notepad
Go to Edit,Select All, Edit, Copy
Come back to this thread
And press Ctrl+V to paste the log into the thread.

Definitely post a HijackThis log here.

A search for chddpw.bin turns up nothing. Did you spell it correctly?

LOGITECH DESKTOP MESSENGER is not working properly. Go to add/remove programs and remove that. You can add it back later if you decide you want to, it's not required.

I also suggest you remove Kazaa and Limewire.

After that Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} - http://install.wildtangent.com/adve...cing/wtinst.cab
O16 - DPF: {2253F320-AB68-4A07-917D-4F12D8884A06} (ChainCast VMR Client Proxy) - http://64.124.45.181/downloads/ccpm_0237.cab

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Reboot and post another log. Also indicate if the error is gone or not.

I'll second that. Uninstall Desktop Messenger. Once it's uninstalled, make sure to delete its folder from inside the C:\Program Files\Logitech folder - if it's still there after the uninstall.

----------------------------------------------------------------

You have no antivirus program installed and running in the background?

----------------------------------------------------------------

You've got programs running in the background that don't need to be, so let's get the startup list trimmed down. This won't interfere with getting your log worked on.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Uncheck the following:

evntsvc.exe

mstask.exe

loadpowerprofile
(both entries with this name)

backweb-8876480.exe

powerreg scheduler.exe

osa.exe
(If there are any entries for findfast and/or microsoft office, uncheck those also)

click Apply - OK afterwards, then reboot.

(Note: If you uninstall KAZAA, as advised to, that should get rid of the kda.exe entry. If not, uncheck that one too)

I followed all your instructions. Problem remains.
Some additional info:
The initially displayed at boot up - File Not Found C:windows\chddpw.bin
the next panel states - Install cannot find the software you are
installing. Please select (the devices are listed c:, a:...)
When cancelled the next panel -This installation program will now exit.
BTW, this PC is off line and will be donated to a local school - no antivirus needed.

Here is the latest Log File:

If you are going to donate the PC why not put a fresh load on it?

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O8 - Extra context menu item: LimeShop Preferences - file://C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Temp\limeshop_script0.htm
O9 - Extra button: Net2Phone - {4B30061A-5B39-11D3-80F8-0090276F843F} - http://www.net2phone.com/ (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

That was pretty much what I was going to say.

Why don't you format the hard drive and wipe it out and then do a fresh install of Windows 98?

Or you can just search for that file in your registry and delete all instances you find. If you screw up the registry, you'll just do a fresh install then! ;)

You said you did an "f8" startup, I assume you mean "step by step confirmation"?

At what point in that startup sequence was the message generated?

This doesn't sound like something you'd find in the registry, but to check, run regedit and select Edit > Find. Enter the name and select Find Next. Be sure you start with the file tree completely collapsed.

If you get a hit, note its location and hit f3 to continue searching.

Also the HijackThis options include that of generating a "startuplist", (see the misc tools section), this will list some additional areas. Be sure to check the box for "list minor sections".

Post that as well.
