My son downloaded the Google Chrome Bar maybe two weeks ago now and when I try to get into my Studio 12 Ultimate video editing software, it won't let me in, it reads: This application failed to start because MSVFW.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I need to know if this is a straight registry prob or can I just re-install the program? Is MSVFW.dll a part of the registry, am I screwed because it's missing? I am operating Window XP Home Edition as of right now!!! Oh yeah, my computer won't let me restore my computer to a previous day, it won't let me install Service Pack 3, either. I just need some guidance. Thanks!!!! HELP!!!!!!!

Howdy,

You could post your HijackThis log and see if anything shows up

Download HijackThis to your desktop
  • Close all open windows
  • Double click on HJTSetup.exe on your Desktop
  • Click Run and Install
  • It will install to Program files by default
  • it will launch Hijack This
  • Click on "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
  • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
  • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

Hi MSVFW.dll is not a Windows dll file and must belong to your Studio 12 Ultimate video editing software.
You may need to reinstall the program for it to work correctly.

Why are you unable to install Service Pack 3 - what happens when you try?

Edit - correction.
MSVFW may be part of Service Pack 1.
What service pack is installed?

@ blues_harp28: when I try to download Ser Pack 3 it acts as if it is downloading and then in the finishing up screen, it just tells me it can't continue, I'm not sure what the msg is: I would have to try again and write it down!! Yes, my computer is jacked!! I have Ser Pack 2 right now. Thx for your reply as well.. any more suggestions from you guys are more than welcome!!!
Here's that info: I'll expect a reply from you sometime next week, this is a lot of crap LOL!!! Sorry for the mess, but I'm a newbie and I have a 17 year old son sharing the same computer! Don't be too harsh on me!! LOL!!!

Hi you have a few entries that look strange and many toolbars including Limewire - which is known to carry infections.
I am no log expert.
Your best bet is to get a Malware and Hijack this log expert to check your log.

Click on the Red report button and ask the Moderators to move your post to the Malware and Hijack this log forum.

They are always busy and it will take some time.
Until your system is clean - then you may be able to update to Service Pack 3.

Thx blues_harp28 I'm on that right now, I'll be reporting back when I get a response and I will get rid of Limewire in the meantime!!!

As I say it may take some time - but well worth getting your system clean while you are here.
And keep an eye on that son of yours ;)

LOL!!!! He'll be leaving for college soon!!! Do you have any suggestions for a registry cleaner that is compatible with Windows XP: I read somewhere that all reg cleaners are not for Windows XP and I could be doing more damage than good.

Moved to malware. Reg cleaners are generally not recommended; they do more harm than good.
Hopefully a malware expert will take a look at your log. Do be patient since they are busy.

first go to add/remove progranms & uninstall

Google Toolbar
Ask Toolbar
Yahoo! Toolbar
Family Toolbar
LimeWire Toolbar
Ancestry Toolbar

they all clash with each other and cause problems./ After we have finished, you can install EITHER yahoo or google toolbars BUT NOT BOTH ( if you want a search toolbar at all )

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
  • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.
