    1Gb, 60 Gb HD
    5 years old.

Machine wont boot/crashed. I've read posts on corrupt/missing hal.dll but none that pertain to my situation, which is.

    1. CD is no longer working.
    2. No XP recovery or Installation CDs that came with the laptop.
    3. Used an Emergency Boot Loader on USB to be able to get to the F8 menu.

Getting to the F8 menu and having gone through most of the choices, I get the missing/corrupt hal.dll message. Without the emergency boot loader, I simply get disk read error, press alt-ctrl-del.

Running Dell diagnostics from F2, I get error 1000-0146 on the DST test.

The week prior to this crash, I ran debug from F8 menu and it went through all sorts of sector repairs.

Its probably a failing HD but I want to attempt one last effort at recovery. I have access to a Del XP SP1 Installation Disk and tried WinToFlash to create a USB Installation but it would not load.

I read in a thread that I might have to disconnect the HD and have a repairman install hal.dll. Can I do that myself? What if I load hal.dll onto the emergency boot loader? Is there such a thing as Linux installer on USB?

I guess I'm just not the type to throw away a machine that could still be salvaged.

    um, HELPPPP!

    Thanks.

I installed XP on the USB using wintoflash. However the laptop still wont boot. Im gonna try adding the boot.ini file that was on an emergency boot loader.

I dont understand image/ISO burning though.
