Help!! I can't see the contents of the My Documents folder. No matter how I look at it, (windows explorer or desktop icon) it shows 0 items. If I save a new document it goes missing. I can however open documents that are saved there if they are in the DOCUMENTS folder of the start button. I can also open them if they are still listed under the FILE portion of any Microsoft product, so I'm certain that they are still there, just in hiding. I have run NAV with a 1/2/02 update and found no viruses. I am uncertain what else to do??? I have about 1000 documents in this folder. Also, I have other users set up on this pc (wife and kids) and there is nothing wrong with thier MY DOCUMENTS folders. All items appear to be intact.

Is your computer running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP? I assume you are since you posted in this forum. If that's the case, there's a My Documents folder for every user account on the computer. I would think you're running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP, so try this. Go into Windows Explorer. Open a folder called Documents and Settings. How many folders are listed there? There should be an Administrator folder and an All User folder. How many others are there, and what are they called? If you double-click on them to open them, you'll see a My Documents folder in each one. Documents are saved in the My Documents folder under the user folder of the user who is currently logged in.

Sorry about the missing info. I'm running 2000. I have used explorer and it shows 0 items. All of the other users have items in their folders. Mine is setup to use administrator rights while no one else's are.

Are you sure you've been saving them in your My Documents folder? If you do a Search for one of the filenames, does it show up?

Create a new document using Microsoft Word (if you have that). Then save it with a unique name. Close Word. Now click Start, Search, For Files or Folders. Search for the file you just saved. What folder is it in? Open that folder to see if your documents are there. Did you recently create a new user account for yourself? Did you delete any accounts or profiles recently?

OK, new document has been created and saved in the MY DOCUMENTS folder. BUT IT'S NOT THERE!!!! I can find it only in the RECENT folder. There has been no users added or deleted in the past 8 months. They were there this morning, but I saved a document from the internet (major site, so I assume it's reputable) and when I went to look for it, I couldn't find it or anything else.

Did you look for it using the Start>Search>For Files Or Folders option?

Angel,
I used both options. I have tried to save several documents to this folder and they all just dissappear.

Ok, wierd...
Well, it's obvious they're still there if you can still open them from within Word or from Recent.
You said this only happens with Office documents?
Dreamboat will hopefully be by soon and possibly shed some light on this.

Well office documents are what I use mostly. I have tried to open Adobe PDF file that are under the FILE option in Acrobat Reader but it won't open those files. I'm a little on the desperate side as I have several hours of college homework that needs to be turned in next week.
My kids also need to type a paper for homework but I'm not sure if I want to start writing to the drive until I know where my stuff is.

Well, it looks like Dreamboat has left...

Are you always saving the files in My Documents? Can you try saving a file elsewhere on your HD - like on your Desktop? Can you see it there?

Yes I can save and read from elsewhere. I've saved items to the desktop and other folders.

OK this may or may not help. I just went to save a picture from another site and it defaulted to the MY PICTURES folder as I would expect. It found it and all of the things that were in it. BUT I still can't see it any other way. Explorer, search, etc...

Try repairing your Documents folder:

Go to Start/Run and type the following, then click 'OK':

regsvr32 /i mydocs.dll (there's a space after 'regsvr32')

You ought to get a little confrmation, that you've succeeded in registering the dll.

You may need to reboot.

Tell us what happens.

Good luck,

Sorry angel, but thanks for your confidence. I can't say I venture into this forum often at all! It's scary in here.

Steve: Open Word, go to Tools-Options and hit the File Locations tab. What path does it have? If you cannot see the whole path, double-click it.

Methinks (nah, mehopes!) a network path and that's why you cannot find them on a search...

I've NEVER heard this specific problem in almost 4 years of 8-hours-a-day software support.

Also--Open explorer, Tools-Folder options (? not sure in 2K), and make sure you're viewing all hidden files too. Perhaps your folder has been hidden?

angel: thanks for the heads up! And anyone can feel free any time to PM me.
