Today i formatted my hard-drive on my computer which had multiple installations of windows (XP and 2000), but when i try and start up the computer using a Windows 98 boot/startup disk, after "Verifying DMI Pool Data......." a message saying "Missing Operating System" comes up below. i have tried also a Win 95 and the XP set of startup disks but i haven't had any luck as such. can anyone please help?

    Welcome to TSG.

You might try your Hard Drive manufacturers software, here are some examples.

    Maxtor

    Seagate

    Western Digital

All the downloads will create a bootable floppy, with which you can test and write zeros to your drive.

What operating system are you trying to install?

unfortunately my hard-drive is a samsung and is very old, therefore i cannot find one of these utilities on their website. do you have any other suggestions for example a third-party utility that would do the same sort of thing? Also i was changing around all the cables connecting the HDD and the CD-ROM, and that let me, on a few occasions get to a DOS command line but i couldn't do much seeing as the HDD was unplugged.

It looks like your right, samsung doesn't offer diagnostic software for your model any more. They would probably e-mail it to you if you asked.

Any who, IBM must have sold DFT to hitachi, this is the first Diagnostic Software I used years ago. It should work an any IDE/SATA Drive.

Thanks, but i tried the samsung disk manager and i eventually got that to run after i changed around the hard drive and cd-rom cables and jumpers, i then wrote 0's to the whole disk and works fine, now it is just a case of installing Fedora (not going too well) or Windows 2000.
