I just finished downloading the new update today and was playing a few games of Warcraft 3. But after I closed that I realized that a majority of the shortcuts on my desktop have reverted to basic icons. I thought it might be the new update so I used the sticky and was about to make the changes to my registry but I checked and the Verclsid.exe program that the windows help tells you to do here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165? is missing. So I haven't done that yet because I didn't want to screw up my registry in case the d word value screws something up if the file isn't there. As I used my computer, a few of the icons reverted back to the correct image but some are still the same. I know it seems like a minor problem but I'm afraid it could be the tip of the ice burg to a larger problem. And it is still fairly aggravating. I would appreciate any help at all. Here is my Hijack this log incase you need it.

I was also working on reformatting my computer reformatted in the next month or so and I was thinking of replacing the free version of zone alarm and ad-aware (along with a few other programs) as a replacement to Norton Internet security and anti-virus. Norton brand stuff seems to always give me more trouble than its worth. Any thoughts on that?

Here is an image of the problem. When I start the computer all the icons besides files are all the icon that looks like a window with a blue taskbar. But after maximizing one of my explorer windows and minimized it, most of them reverted to normal. Except for the actual drives and a few system type folders. Does anyone know what the cause of this is?

    # 4. Repairs the Icon View. To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

If that fails, give system restore a try.

Which update did you download today? If there is a way to remove that update that might be another option also.

Its kind of odd now. I was on my computer today and it randomly reverted after a restart. The thing is, I restarted about 4 times and they were still messed up. But this last time they were normal. Is there any way this could be caused by something in my system that shouldn't be? Should I still use that registry edit or will it be dangerous now that things seem to be back to normal?

I would leave it alone for now unless the problem comes back. Which I am guessing it will.
