    First post here....

I had a missing "Windows\system32\config\system" upon restarting my comp last Saturday. Couldn't boot into safe mode at all. Used HP's recovery console to run chkdsk and it fix errors on the volume. Wouldn't let me run the recovery disks I had to get from HP since they are not given with a new computer. Great I thought...

Upon starting now, my antivirus won't run and a lot of Windows programs(Search adn System Restore just a blank page, Media Player, etc) .I can get IE to open up but no active X although it says it is enabled, also my home page doesn't show up at all but it is set to it. Those are some of the things I have found wrong so far as I am sure I have more.

I downloaded System Mechanic6 , Registry Mechanic , ErrorDoctor to see where I have problems. Also got HJT1.99

    Can anyone help in anyway?
    Thanks
    Darrell

Thank you very much for the zip file. It seems all my Windows programs work now(Media Player, System Restore , IE with all my web pages coming up now) ..

The only thing that seems not to work is my Norton AntiVirus. I still am getting an error message when I restart the computer that it could not. When I click on the program from the start menu it browses for it. Same for the Norton Firewall. It seems to be missing the .exe files somehow.

Here is the most current HJT log ....

    Thank you
    Darrell

I did the Sytem Restore to a week before I couldn't boot. It says it fixed a registry entry by log (something like that). But it came back.....

    Now some other minor issues..
    1. AntiVirus/Firewall not there or launching.
    2. Windows games that came with XP missing.
    3. Clicking on links in websites that open up another window are very slow and momentarily freeze IE...

I am sure I will find out more as I go on....

Well for the NAV or Norton Firewall stuff, you need to remove and reinstall following the procedures in those links I posted.

For the Windows games, you will probably need your CD. Then go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components > Accessories > Details > Games.

If the "games" box is checked, Uncheck it and click OK. Then check it again and click OK. You may be prompted for your CD at this time. Possibly you can substitute:

    c:\I386

which is your cabinet files folder.

For the "new window" problem try going to Start > Run and enter:

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Also follow the rest of the regsvr32 commands in this article if necessary.

    >> Also since you did a System Restore, post a new HijackThis scanlog

There are no serious problems with it, but this is a damaged Symantec NAV or Ad-blocking entry:

    O2 - BHO: CNisExtBho Class - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - blank (file missing)

Again, it looks like that program needs to be removed and reinstalled.

Turned my comp back on after a few days...

System is still having 10-15 second delay when open new a window in IE and opening programs.

I have tried to run chkdsk /r and it stops at 75% with unrecoverable error. Tried to use the HP system recovery discs that I had to order to try to repair and now I get a missing <windows root>sytem32\hal.dll when I try that way.....

Windows starts up basically normal and most of my stuff is there except the original games as I noted earlier....

The drive itself may have bad sectors. Either HP or the drive vendor may have a diagnostic utility you can run on it. Fixing it though may require a full destructive reinstall.

I assume you were trying a "repair" reinstall from the recovery disks rather than a destructive recovery?

Are you seeing any errors in the Event Viewer (Run eventvwr.msc) not associated with attempts to boot in Safe Mode?

To post them, double click them to view their descriptions and then use the double-paper copy icon to copy the description to the clipboard for pasting.

In terms of the life expectancy of the system -- this is obviously the most serious and has to be repaired or the hard drive replaced:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Ntfs
    Event Category: Disk
    Event ID: 55
    Date: 1/19/2006
    Time: 5:59:04 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer:
    Description:
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.

Only then can you really address the other problems -- perhaps through a removal and reinstallation of SP2

Again, since chkdsk has not cooperated, you need a specialized drive diagnostic utility. They can repair drives -- but the result may mean that the operating system is unbootable and has to be reinstalled.

Do you know the name of the drive manufacturer or can you find a diagnostic utility on HPs site for your system?

See if the Windows System Information utility will run.

    Start > Run: msinfo32

Select Components > Storage > Disks

    Note the model number.

You can probably "google" it to associate it with a drive manfufacturer.

This might not be possible but I am going to ask..

If I boot in safe mode and use system restore back to a point way before I had trouble would I be able to run chkdsk /r to completion? just curious
