I would like to ask a serious question in regard to mmos.

Why is it that a HUGE percentage of all mmos released have to follow one of two formulas:

-Sword and Sorcery. Trolls, goblins, mages, ect.
-Anime. Super gohan oriuchimaaru increaes his power leve to get megasword 9! *little penquin and/or bunny half animated bounces around*

I mean, look at the market share as of april 2008:

    Wow - Sword and Sorcery - 62.3%
    Runescape - S&S - 6.9%
    Lineage - S&S - 6.6%
    Lineage 2 - S&S - 6.3%
    Final Fantasy 11 - Anime - 3.1%
    Dofus - Anime - 2.4%
    EVE Online - Sci-Fi - 1.4%
    Everquest 2 - S&S - 1.2%
    LOTR Online - S&S - 1.2%
    Everquest - S&S - 1.1%
    City of Heroes - Anime - 0.8%
    Tabula Rasa - Sci-Fi - 0.8%
    Tibia - S&S - 0.8%
    All Others - - 5.1%

This puts the total market shares by genre at:

    Sword and Sorcery - 86.4%
    Anime - 6.3%
    Sci-Fi - 2.2%
    Other / Unsorted - 5.1%

Why the HELL is it this bland?

What would you like them to be? There's Second Life which is completely different from all of those and very popular.

I have looked for a good SciFi one that is free and the closest I have found
    is RF Online.
Even that is dependent on swords and magic and stuff.
It has guns but they are weak.
Guess that's what people pay for.
Would be nice to see a good FPS adventure.

I would like to see more modern day or science fiction mmos. Only ones I've seen are ao and eve.

You could try Tabula Rasa too.

Sword and sorcery is prevalent because it sells. And the hint of sex doesn't hurt either.

Pardon, was your post a rant or a suggestion? Or both?

Have you tried any of the Sci-Fi MMO's you listed? There are some other Sci-Fi MMO's coming but I suspect they will be for a niche market as well.
