My wife left her mobile phone under the PC desk today. I got a strange series of noises from the PC late this afternoon which are best described as a muffled 'chunka chunka chunka' - rather like the sound of one of those big old electric jumper switches at a telephone exchange.
Couldn't figure it out until my wife found she had a text message on her phone that had been received at the time of the noises.
She says she has noted this at her place of work before.
Is there a known risk here of having mobiles in close proximity to a PC?
I noted that the printer threw a wobbly when I next came to use it, though its okay now.
Any thoughts out there?

I use a portable 900mhz phone and have noticed that if to close to the monitor, it causes distortion due to the magnet in the speaker. I have not seen any problems when using it(transmitting) but who knows what actually may be happening. The pc case should shield most internal components, but stray RF may disrupt internal signals. Moble phones have a much higher output rate than home portables and mobles are actually on even when no in use as they have to send out a signal to allow reception of messages and to tell the relay stations it is available for reception. I personally feel it is best to keep all magnetic and transmission devices away from the computers close in area.
