I set up a Compaq PI 233, 32mb 4000 series desk top for my father, with a Motorola PCI 56K modem. It was a real chore to get the modem to be recognized but now that it works (the correct driver downloaded from the web) it drops the phone line connection after about 20 min use. I have used it on my line that never drops me (ISP never drops me either) when I'm on for hours but with the Compaq it drops the line. When the modem drops the line the dialer sometimes locks up or thinks that the modem is still connected. Sometimes I have to reboot the thing to get everything in sync again.

I set up an identical computer for my sister with an older ISA 56K modem and it loads pages faster and is very reliable.

I am wondering if the new PCI is just too much for the older computer? Does anyone think that an older style ISA modem might work better?
