When I look at my device manager I see a modem icon but when I click on the + sign and highlight the modem it says it cannot load the drivers for my
Modem.cpl. I have tried removing and reinstalling it but I get the same thing.
When I check in the system information it says no modem is installed. I have added a sound card so I can try to at least have sound but to date it still doesn't work. Running Win 98SE, AMD duron processor, SIS system hsp596 is supposed to be the modem brand. Please help me. A DEAF COMPUTER IS THE PITS.

Is there a free IRQ for the modem?

Are you sure it is snuggly attached?

Start, run, type msinfo32 and hit ok, go to hardware, irqs, edit, select all, edit, copy and come back and paste.

Tells me that the modem is not installed :D

Can you check to be sure it's secure? Those little things can be nasty inside the case as they usually sit too close to the edge and sometimes all the pins are covered or covered all the way.

When you 'remove' it from device manager and restart the computer, does windows find it or are you trying to manually add it?

Is anything connected to the serial ports?
Do you play dos games?

11 SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
11 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
11 C-Media AC97 Audio Device

This is probably the reason that the sound doesn't work as well. Why do you have 2 network adapters? One built in and one PCI card add in?

Modem is onboard, I will remove the adapters I am not using, and no I am not using the LPT printer port. How do I switch the settings for the ports or what should I do. No I dont play any Dos games. I also noticed that my system speakers don't have and IRQ listed in the system information page.

Thanks so much for you time and info

I have the PC cillin disk with the sound, audio and other drivers on it.

Try re-installing the audio drivers that are on this disk. According to the chipset info,
Integrated Audio/Modem Controllers with AC'97 Interface
- Support AC'97 V2.2 Audio Codec and Modem Codec

Remove the modem in device mangler, re-install the drivers and reboot. Is the on-board audio enabled in the bios?

Turn off com (serial) and lpt ports via bios setup.

I have those modems on a couple of boards, please check to be sure it is securely attached. Even though windows will find it if it isn't, it won't work.
