No...a modem/router is just that....both. It's one device that does both. Or you can get a separate modem (modem only) and then use a router.

Well.....it's just a modem. So yes you''ll need a wifi router.

But, you can get what you apparently want--a DOCSIS 3.1 modem/(wireless) router with VOIP. Example.

Make sure with Comcast that the modem is supported and they will provision with the phone system. The ISP that I worked for will only allow modems that was purchased direct from the manufacturer (Arris). No 2nd hand/Ebay purchases. Perhaps now other manufacturers are making these modems, the ISPs are allowing them on their respective networks.

Edit: the ISP (Sparklight) is still only allowing eMTAs (VoIP modems) from Arris or leased. While the modem (internet) part can be used, the phone service will not work... so double check with Comcast before buying.

I was up at comcast and the girl said any modem router with voice and DOCSIA 3.1 will work although she said she was not allowed to say any brands. She said you get what you pay for. That's a lot of money to save renting one. Anyone got any good ideas?
